CFP: Academic Provocations

Intermezzo, a digital longform publication associated with Enculturation (http://www.enculturation.net) seeks submissions that deal with the topic of academic provocations.

Academic culture is one of complaint and anger. In The Chronicle of Higher Education and InsideHigherEd, weekly columns and essays address frustrations over the labor market, student attention, administrative bloat, the death of the Humanities, the ineptitude of organizations such as the Modern Language Association, contingent teaching, and other issues. In the Humanities, notable writers such as Stanley Fish or James Sledd earned reputations as provocateurs for challenging academia's beliefs and values. Provocateurs are those who challenge disciplinary norms and attitudes in ways that upset a significant number of academics while simultaneously creating new lines of conversation. While some provocations address disciplinary practices (deconstruction, topic modeling, cultural decodings), Intermezzo is looking for provocations regarding the politics, technologies, labor practices, umbrella organizations, or other issues regarding academia itself.

Intermezzo seeks 20-40,000 word essays devoted to a topic of not just frustration or anger, but provocation. Essays should not only address the issue that troubles, but also should be bold and assertive in their response. We are looking for voices who are not afraid to tackle academic issues in strong language and unconventional style. Whereas disciplinary journals may be unwilling to showcase the rhetoric of provocation, Intermezzo is looking for such essays.

All essays published with Intermezzo undergo peer review. Intermezzo is committed to providing an outlet for essays too long for journal publication, but too short for monograph publication. Essays are published as open source and receive ISBN numbers. They may include multimedia as well.

Intermezzo is meant to be a venue where writers can produce scholarly work in unique ways, outside of institutional or disciplinary expectation, and it takes advantage of digital media as a platform for both content and distribution of timely topics.
