2016 Northern Plains Conference on Early British Literature (NPCEBL)

We are pleased to announce that the 2016 Northern Plains Conference on Early British Literature (NPCEBL) will be held at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD, on April 15 and 16, 2016. We are seeking proposals for individual papers and complete panels on topics related to British literature from its beginnings through the eighteenth century (please consult submission guidelines below).

The plenary speaker will be Dr. Lawrence Manley, William R. Keenan, Jr., Professor of English at Yale University. Dr. Manley specializes in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century British literature, with a particular emphasis on literature and society, theater history and performance studies, intellectual history, and the classical foundations of the English literary and critical traditions. He is the author of Convention, 1500-1750 (Harvard UP, 1980); Literature and Culture in Early Modern London (Cambridge UP, 1995); and most recently Lord Strange's Men and Their Plays, 1589-1593 (with Sally-Beth MacLean, Yale UP, 2014). He is the editor of London in the Age of Shakespeare: An Anthology (Croon Helm, 1986) and The Cambridge Companion to the Literature of London (Cambridge UP, 2011). In addition, he has contributed to The Cambridge History of Literary Criticism, The Cambridge History of Early Modern English Literature, the Blackwell Companion to Renaissance Drama, and the forthcoming Shakespeare Encyclopedia.

Submission Guidelines for Papers and Panels

Proposals for individual papers should be 250 to 300 words in length. Accepted proposals will be grouped into panels by theme and assigned a panel moderator.

Proposals for panels should include the following information:

• Panel title
• Panel organizer/moderator
• Name of presenter and title of preferably three, but no more than four, papers
• 250-300 word abstracts for each paper

To leave sufficient time for discussion at the end of each session, panels with three speakers must limit their papers to twenty minutes, while panels with four speakers must limit their papers to fifteen minutes.

Conference participants will have the opportunity to submit their papers for publication in the conference proceedings.
