Teaching, Digital Humanities, and 18th-Century Studies (deadline Jan 30)--Vancouver, 14-17 Oct 2015

updated:
Saturday, January 10, 2015 - 12:32pm
Canadian Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (CSECS)

Proposals are invited for presentations on the digital humanities and the teaching of eighteenth-century studies.

At last year's CSECS conference, there was a lively debate on the relationship between digital humanities and eighteenth-century studies: this panel seeks to continue that discussion.

The focus is open, but papers might consider:
*dh and un/conventional pedagogies
*bringing dh research into the classroom
*dh and disciplinarity
*dh and book history

NB: CSECS rules allow conference participants to present in roundtables in addition to one paper presentation. If you intend to present a paper as well, please indicate that you would like to be considered for a roundtable session.

Teaching the Eighteenth Century (deadline Jan 30)--Vancouver, 14-17 October 2015

updated:
Saturday, January 10, 2015 - 12:13pm
Canadian Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies

Panels and roundtables on teaching book history, on innovative course design, and on teaching, technology and digitial humanities in the 18C.

Excellent teaching is what invites the next generation of great scholars into our profession. Perhaps because of bad high school experiences, many students expect the 18th-century to be a period of dry treatises, hard-to-understand poems, and repetitive plays full of in-jokes. We know differently, but what is the best way to teach the brilliance, wit, complexity, and conflict of our period?

Building upon the models of MLA and ASECS, CSECS 2015 will offer for the second year a cluster of panels on teaching the long eighteenth century.

CFP: Verge: Studies in Global Asias is Accepting Submissions for Issue #3 (Special Topic: Asian Urbanisms and Urbanizations)

updated:
Friday, January 9, 2015 - 2:35pm
Verge: Studies in Global Asias

Verge: Studies in Global Asias is a new journal that includes scholarship from scholars in both Asian and Asian American Studies. These two fields have traditionally defined themselves in opposition to one another, with the former focused on an area-studies, nationally and politically oriented approach, and the latter emphasizing epistemological categories, including ethnicity and citizenship, that drew mainly on the history of the United States. The past decade however has seen a series of rapprochements in which, for instance, categories "belonging" to Asian American Studies (ethnicity, race, diaspora) have been applied with increasing success to studies of Asia.

CFP: Edited collection - 'Transitions, endings and resurrections in fandom'

updated:
Friday, January 9, 2015 - 10:34am
Rebecca Williams / University of South Wales

Periods of transition and change, as well as endings, can have huge impact on fans who either engage with texts collectively via fan communities or who have more individual connections with fan objects. This edited collection seeks to draw on existing work on fandom in this area to offer greater insight into how fans respond to and cope with transitions or periods of ending such as actors or characters leaving television shows; the cancellation of shows entirely; the deaths of famous people; the splitting up of bands or the ends of careers of musical acts; players leaving particular sports teams, and so on.

[UPDATE] ASA 2015 -- "Blackness and the Miseries of Law" (DEADLINE EXTENDED)

updated:
Friday, January 9, 2015 - 9:21am
American Studies Association

In the wake of the deaths of Michael Brown, Aiyana Jones, Eric Garner, John Crawford, Tamir Price, Ezell Ford, and too many others, and the ostensible inability of the law or the legal system to provide something resembling "justice" in the aftermath of these deaths by police violence, it is impossible not to consider the implications of a legally imposed condition of misery on Black bodies in the U.S. This panel takes up the meeting's call to consider a "long and changing past" of misery by asking how the historical imbrication of U.S. law and race - most obvious and yet still most crucial to analyze in slavery - further structures conditions of misery for Black Americans.
