In order to promote dialogue between “East” and “West”, and to also unpack and problematize those categories, we welcome papers that address a broad range of issues, especially in relation to literature, art, film, and popular culture. Interdisciplinary and theoretical approaches are encouraged and especially approaches that focus on contentious political and moral issues. While traditional forms of presentation are welcome, participants may also make use of less conventional modes involving, for example, pictorial essays or the incorporation of social media.

The conference will take place at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 1-2 December 2016. The organizers are proud to announce that “East/West: Ruptures and Convergences” is being held to commemorate the University of Malaya's 111th anniversary this year.

Scholars from all parts of the world—East and West—are very welcome to attend.

Subtopics for this international conference will include but are not limited to:

--the transnational turn

--the environment

--the refugee crisis

--hunger

--war

--travel

--religion and spirituality

--feminism, post-feminism

--film adaptation

--global issues in Southeast Asian, South Asian, or East Asian literature, theater,  television, and/or film

--global issues in American or other Western literature, theater, television, and/or film.

Registration fee: 159 MYR for local students; 371 MYR for local researchers and lecturers; 106 USD for participants from outside Malaysia.
