The Pharmakon of Politics
Below is a proposal by Joshua Winchester and Alessia Ricciardi for a seminar on Lacan at the ACLA in 2017 (July 6th-9th, Utrecht University, the Netherlands). The deadline for abstracts is September 23rd, 2016. There is some interest already in publication post conference.
Literature abounds with monsters - from the dragons that plague medieval towns to the vampires that rise from nineteenth-century graves to the aliens, cyborgs, and zombies that serve as the basis of our contemporary nightmares. The prevalence of these creatures prompts literary critics to ask why they haunt us. What can we learn from a closer examination of these fictional monsters?

This panel considers the centrality of the space of the sea in the contemporary global migrant/refugee crisis. We invite papers that explore the complexities of the current crisis by addressing issues such as global capitalism, national violence and religious persecution, race and gender, sexual trafficking, precarious labor, and migratory law. Papers may address current and historical crossings, and they may consider various bodies of water, such as the Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Caribbean Sea, etc. Papers that take a cross-disciplinary or interdisciplinary approach are welcome.
