Ula Lukszo Klein, Texas A&M International University, and Emily Kugler, Howard University

In Susan Sontag’s now-classic essay, “Notes on ‘Camp,’” Sontag argues for a critical dimension of the term “camp.” Camp, for Sontag, is “one way of seeing the world as an aesthetic phenomenon.” For her, Camp emphasizes a blend of the silly and the extravagant, making the serious and the ridiculous equal to one another. She cites the beginnings of the Enlightenment period as an important moment for the establishment of this sensibility:

deadline for submissions:
Friday, March 31, 2017

The Cartoon Network television series Steven Universe (2013- ), created by Rebecca Sugar, the first woman to create a show for the network, has attracted both media acclaim and a devoted fan following for, among other things, its progressive portrayals of queer characters and blended families in a story driven by members of a rigid caste society who rebelled in order to halt their civilization’s colonization of Earth. Despite Steven Universe offering rich analytical opportunities, very little scholarship has yet been published on the show, and we are seeking submissions for an edited collection, titled Keep Beach City Weird: Theorizing Steven Universe

that will remedy that lack.

The dominant narratives of women in music have neglected, obscured, or minimized the successes and importance of countless female musicians who became the driving forces in the development and success of their genres. Instead, such narratives emphasize the rarity of the female musician or attribute her success to a male mentor, especially in the period before second-wave feminism. While recent research has uncovered the histories of forgotten women in art music, little work has been done on the careers of women in vernacular musics. For instance, Ruth Alice "Ronnie" Gilbert was a founding member of the Weavers, a long-time activist in social issues, and a highly influential singer-songwriter who is often overshadowed by Pete Seeger.

Volume on Shusaku Endo's "Deep River"

updated:

Mark W. Dennis and Darren J. N. Middleton
deadline for submissions:
Friday, November 4, 2016

The editors of a planned, interdisciplinary volume on Shusaku Endo's last novel, Deep River, are looking for one final chapter contribution.

Set in 1984, Endo's novel features multiple references to the Hindu-Sikh conflict of the time, and we are inviting scholars to consider writing a chapter on the novel in relation to Sikhism, Hinduism, Indian secularism, and/or religion and violence.

Final essays (7000 words, inclusive of endnotes) are due in late May 2017.

Since this is the final piece in our planned anthology's puzzle, interested contributors should send an email, by 11/4/2016, to d.middleton2@tcu.edu, containing:
