Gumbo & Zydeco: Interdisciplinary Magic

CFP is for MLA 2018 in New York City. This panel on Latinx Literature for Youth will be a Children´s Literature Association (ChLA) sponsored, guaranteed panel.

Literature for youth is an established tradition in Latinx culture, from Jose Martí’s La Edad de Oro (1889) to Pura Belpré’s folklore and Ernesto Galarza’s “mini-libros” to Matt de la Peña’s 2016 Newbery Medal win. This panel seeks to examine the current and historical role of literature for youth in the Latin/a literary world and how Latino/a writers portray youth cultures and subcultures for U.S. audiences. Papers responding critically to the following themes (though not limited to those presented here) are solicited:

On odd numbered years since the first October the Blackfriars Playhouse opened, scholars from around the world have gathered in Staunton, during the height of the Shenandoah Valley’s Fall colors, to hear lectures, see plays, and explore early modern theatre. In 2017, the American Shakespeare Center’s Education and Research Department will once again host Shakespeareans, scholars and practitioners, to share ideas about Shakespeare in the study and Shakespeare on the stage and to find ways that these two worlds – sometime in collision – can collaborate.

The Amiri Baraka Society invites abstracts (of no more than 250 words) for presentations at the annual conference of the ALA (http://www.americanliteratureassociation.org/). We will also consider a limited number of panel proposals (of no more than 500 words).

We welcome submissions on any topic related to Amiri Baraka, his art, his politics, his life.

Green Letters 22,1 (2018) Crime Fiction and Ecology

 Green Letters: Studies in Ecocriticism is the journal of ASLE-UKI (the UK-Ireland branch of the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment). It is a peer-reviewed journal published by Routledge and supported by Bath Spa University and the University of Worcester. Green Letters explores interdisciplinary interfaces between humans and the natural and built environment. Submissions are now invited for a themed issue ‘Crime Fiction and Ecology’ to be edited by Joseph Walton (University of Surrey) and Samantha Walton (Bath Spa University).

Home is a key arena where changes in contemporary societies become a lived experience for the individual. Forms of homemaking can be regarded as a way of dealing with social transformations, whether by positing home as a safe space immune to change, or by adapting it to the requirements of modernization and globalization. The issue of (voluntary or forced) mobility looms large in debates on home, as, for instance, the current migration crisis or the demand for maximum flexibility and mobility of employees in the neoliberal economy shows.
