QUEERING POP CULTURE
QUEERING POP CULTURE PANEL
This session welcomes abstracts looking to queer pop culture or about queer elements of pop culture. By June 1, please submit a 250-word abstract, brief bio, and A/V requirements to Horacio Sierra, Bowie State University, at email@example.com
QUEER YOUTH AND MASS MEDIA ROUNDTABLE
This roundtable discussion will interrogate and reflect on the ways in which queer youth are portrayed in the mass media and how queer youth interact with mass media portrayals via social media, fan fiction, and creating new media. What are current representations of LGBTQIA youths in media? How are these images, stereotypes, and/or representations duplicated and disseminated? How do these representations or images affect how society, at large, views queer youth? Finally, how do LGBTQIA youth negotiate their sense of identity by responding to, interacting with, and creating new forms of mass media?
We are looking for roundtable participants that can engage in a lively conversation and witty banter with fellow participants as we explore these questions and posit new ones. Please send a two-page CV, a brief abstract discussing some of your ideas on this topic, and A/V requirements by June 1, 2017, to Dr. Horacio Sierra at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The 2017 Conference will be held at the Westin Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta, Georgia, from November 3-5. The conference special focus will be High Art/Low Art: Borders and Boundaries in Popular Culture.
