“Words break from me here”: Reading Hopkins, 1918–2018

A conference will be held at London’s Roehampton University 21–23 June, 2018 to mark the centenary of the first edition of Gerard Manley Hopkins’s Poems (1918). Proposals for 20-minute presentations are invited. Topics might include: Hopkins and Pre-Raphaelite, Aestheticist, or Decadent art; and Victorian visual culture; the changing audiences for his poetry; how the poems illuminate current theoretical and cultural debates (for example, gender studies, eco-criticism, digital humanities, textual studies, religious studies). Contributions could also account for the shifting critical receptions of the texts since their publication and suggest new directions for Hopkins scholarship.

The conference will also feature special presentations to mark the publication of the Collected Works of Gerard Manley Hopkins (Oxford UP, 2006–18).

Roehampton University now occupies the buildings and grounds that, in the nineteenth century, were home to many English Jesuits. Hopkins was a Novice at Roehampton’s Manresa House from September 1868 to September 1870.

The deadline for submissions is 1 October 2017. Please send your 300–400 word proposal to:
