Television Studies Session at PAMLA 2017

Friday, November 10 – Sunday, November 12, 2017

Chaminade University of Honolulu

Television Studies, a standing session of the Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association (PAMLA), is now accepting proposals for the organization’s 115th annual conference. This year’s conference theme is “The Sense of Sight: Visuality, Visibility, and Ways of Seeing.”  All proposals in the realm of television studies are welcome, with a particular interest in the following focus issues as well:

  • Subscription television and its impact on television programming and studies (i.e. “binge-watching,” breaking genre barriers, etc.)
  • Subscription television’s original programming (such as Hulu’s East Los High and Handmaid’s Tale; HBO’s Game of Thrones and Westworld; Netflix’s House of Cards and Stranger Things; Showtime’s Masters of Sex and Penny Dreadful).
  • Subscription and cable television sequels, prequels and remakes (examples: Netflix’s Gilmore Girls, Arrested Development, Trailer Park Boys, One Day at a Time or Showtime’s Shameless).
  • Television programming and its changing representations of race, class, gender, etc.

The regular proposal deadline is Sunday, May 21, 2017. Please submit your proposal through the online form, which is available at the following URL:

Please know that PAMLA accepts individual papers rather than organized panels. You can submit up to three proposals to three different sessions, although each proposal must be distinct, and you can ultimately present only one paper at the conference. PAMLA is a congenial and welcoming forum that presents excellent opportunities for meeting with scholars formally and informally from in and outside of your respective fields of study.
