Clare Sponsler In Memoriam II at ICMS 2018
Lydgate Society Sponsored Session at ICMS 2018
Clare Sponsler In Memoriam II: Conceived in conjunction with the Medieval and Renaissance Drama Society, this panel is intended as part of a two-panel sequence celebrating the work of Clare Sponsler. Sponsler, as shown by The Queen’s Dumbshows, had a profound interest in recapturing the intertextuality of Lydgate’s works: not only their attachment to manuscripts, tapestries, architectural pieces, or desserts but also the ways in which scribes, audiences and readers are part of the enduring legacy of the poet’s work. As such, not only the subject but the contexts of her recent work falls within the Lydgate Society’s ongoing remit to engage with Lydgate materially. In celebration of Sponsler’s work and in hopes of continuing the conversations she fostered, the panel will accept proposals on any topics that resonate most strongly with Sponsler’s work: the wide variety of materialities of late medieval texts, considerations of audiences and readers in creating the work, and the ways in which poems were performed outside of their usual literary context. We hope this panel will celebrate Sponsler’s contributions by presenting papers that both engage with and build upon her work.
Paper proposals of 300 words and a participant information form (found here: https://wmich.edu/medievalcongress/submissions ) should be sent to the Lydgate Society at firstname.lastname@example.org no later than September 15th.
