If the nineteenth century witnessed expanded interest in science and facts, it also nurtured a fascination with deceit. From the minstrel stage to P.T. Barnum’s humbugs, questions of authenticity captured the public’s imagination—and paychecks. This panel invites papers that explore nineteenth-century attitudes surrounding truth and belief, with a particular interest in the structures of knowledge and affect that organized popular understandings of credibility, authority, and legitimacy within the cultural landscape.

The Velvet Light Trap Issue 83 - Politics of Space and Place

At the outset of Space and Place: The Perspective of Experience, Yi-Fu Tuan observes, "Space and place are basic components of the lived world; we take them for granted. When we think about them, however, they may assume unexpected meanings and raise questions we have not thought to ask." Power relations are often negotiated through space and embedded in place, and these dynamics resonate through and within media. As such, media studies stands to offer an important contribution to the critical study of space and place, just as this important area of study may help us to reorient and reimagine foundational premises and concerns within our field.

American Academy of Religion Western Region
deadline for submissions:
Sunday, October 1, 2017

This year's theme is "kindness."

Specific to Goddess Studies, what are some of the ways women have been portrayed as kind in religious and mythic narrative or iconography? In which ways has the personification of kindness-as-feminine been damaging to women's roles in the larger socio-political context? Does this have specific implications for narratives including LGBTQ and people of color? Are there any narratives of figures which the mainstream has adopted as malevolent, but actually have much more nuanced and complicated histories? Send your proposal to Angela Sells (omingintobeing@gmail.com.

Decolonization and globalization have made us conscious of the fact that not only is literature no longer national and autonomous, but it never was. Indeed one can only understand any national literature by comparing it with others…or by comparing it with a non-national or a transnational literature. For these reasons the field of comparative literature is more urgent than it ever was.
