American Literature in the World Graduate Conference, Yale University, April 6, 2018

updated:
Monday, September 25, 2017 - 4:29pm
Yale University, Department of English
deadline for submissions:
Friday, December 15, 2017

The conference hopes to broaden the scope of American literature, opening it to more complex geographies, and to a variety of genres and media. The impetus comes partly from a survey of what is currently in the field: it is impossible to read the work of Toni Morrison and Junot Díaz, Yusef Komunyakaa and Carolyn Forché, Tony Kushner and Lynn Nottage without seeing that, for all these authors, the reference frame is no longer simply the United States, but a larger, looser, more contextually varied set of coordinates, populated by laboring bodies, migrating faiths, generational sagas, memories of war, as well as the accents of unforgotten tongues, the taste and smell of beloved foods and spices.

ReFocus: The Films of Pablo Larraín

updated:

Laura Hatry, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid
deadline for submissions:
Thursday, November 30, 2017

One of the central figures in contemporary Chilean film, director Pablo Larraín (b. 1976), presents a harsh portrait of his country’s current reality and of its tortured history in a direct, sometimes surprising, and often controversial oeuvre, never demurring in the face of violence or painful truths about the past. His first feature film, Fuga (2006), which was poorly received by critics, focuses on a composer’s mental health issues; his striking trilogy about Chile’s recent history covers the Pinochet dictatorship in Tony Manero (2008), the last days of the Allende presidency in Post mortem (2010), and the democratic downfall of Pinochet in 1988 in NO (2012).

The 2018 Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) Theatre Symposium will focus on the interplay between theatre and embodiment. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

CALL FOR ESSAYS: Journal Imaginaires: Places of Rupture

updated:
Monday, September 25, 2017 - 3:12pm
Dr Daniel Thomières, Université Reims Champagne-Ardenne
deadline for submissions:
Saturday, September 1, 2018

Journal Imaginaires (CIRLEP, Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne) Call for papers: Places of rupture Major works of art are often the result of a break or of several breaks with their time, which leads their authors to reconfigure their worldviews, reinvent their use of language, modify a genre, or conceive a new theory. But a work itself is also made up of flows and rhythms that delineate or destroy the main features of a man’s existence, a community or a territory for others to take form or be wiped out for ever.
