We invite participants for a curated panel entitled "Hermeneutic Forms" to be held at the joint Society for European Philosophy and Forum for European Philosophy Conference in Colchester, England from June 18th to June 20th.

This panel considers the rich tradition of hermeneutics from Classical Greek to scriptural hermeneutics and the ontological hermeneutics of the 20th century. In particular, it asks the question of whether hermeneutic comparisons can be developed through closer questions of form, and whether such comparative study brings us nearer to confronting an estrangement which is not merely ‘before’ the text, but before the hermeneutic system itself. Hermeneutic mechanisms conceal problematics not only of ideology, but inbuilt predilections towards development, destruction, and particular loci of movement and stillness; in this way, interpretation is not merely a vehicle for the text, but one which mechanistically carries its own accord— it is not merely that the wheels veer left, but that there is a brake or a pedal at all. If we are not satisfied with the ‘radical hermeneutic’ opposition of Derrida and deconstruction, which refuses the hermeneutic tradition for its ‘metaphysical exigency’, the task at hand is an exacting interrogation of what a hermeneutic ‘does’— and the development of a more lucid relationality which not only bears all parties around this action, but the very nature of ‘hermeneutic action’ itself.

Contributions which focus on marginalized fields within the history of philosophy, broadly conceived, that are pertinent to this inquiry of comparative hermeneutics are especially welcome.

Abstracts should be approx. 250-400 words and include a brief bio of approx. 100 words, e-mailed to organizer Lawrence S.W. at shw.lawrence@gmail.com by 8 January 2018. Please do not hesitate to reach out if an extension will be required. Accepted panelists will be notified before February, with a confirmation required by 15 February.
