Platform is a peer-reviewed journal published out of Royal Holloway, University of London and has been devoted to publishing the work of postgraduates, postdoctoral researchers, and entry-level academics in the fields of theatre and performing arts for almost 12 years.

In the playwright’s notes for Angels in America, Tony Kushner advises: 'The moments of magic … are to be fully realized, as bits of wonderful theatrical illusion—which means it’s OK if the wires show, and maybe it’s good that they do, but the magic should at the same time be thoroughly amazing'.
The next issue of Platform is dedicated to the magic of the theatre. This issue deals with all facets of magic in and of the theatre and with aspects of magical thinking and superstition, from the ominous aura that surrounds The Scottish Play to the suspension of disbelief in stage action, from plays with fantastical or science fiction elements to the stagecraft involved in religious processions and rituals.
From a practice-oriented perspective, we are interested in how you convey magic in the theatre. What technical and design considerations go into moments of magic that a text might call for? From a more philosophical perspective, we are curious about the conditions for spectators’ suspension of disbelief and about the connections between acting, embodiment and spiritual and religious beliefs. What is uniquely magical about theatre’s liveness? And why is the elusive connection between performer and audience so often described as ‘magical’?
We welcome paper submissions from postgraduate and early career researchers that may explore or take as a point of inspiration or departure any of the following themes:
· Staging the supernatural
· Fantasy and science fiction plays
· Theatre, performance and spirituality
· Magic and magical creatures in costuming, lighting, sound and set design
· Magicians and illusionists
· Superstitions about the theatre/specific plays
· Ghosts and haunting in the theatre
· Theatre and religion
· The stagecraft and choreography of the church
· Sociological functions of magical fictions and belief in magic
· The suspension of disbelief and the creation of belief
· The magic of liveness
· Performativity as magic
· Acting, representation and embodiment
· Performance and magical thinking
Along with academic articles, we are happy to consider new writing, performance writing, photographic essays, performance responses, and other creative works that speak to our themes. We would like to encourage submissions not only from scholars of theatre, performance and dance, but also from those working in literature, politics, philosophy, music, media arts, film studies, cultural studies, geography, and other related disciplines. In addition, we are happy to consider interdisciplinary and collaborative articles and provocations.
The deadline for submissions is: 26 February 2018.
Submissions should be 4000 words in length, and accompanied by a 200-word abstract. Please submit papers to email@example.com.
Submissions should be original, unpublished work. If required, all images should be appropriately captioned and attributed.
