ALA 2018: POSTINDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENTS | San Francisco | May 24-27, 2018

This panel aims to explore the various literary spaces—both urban and organic—that define American literature after deindustrialization. How does the postindustrial economy remake the ways that people work in, live in, rely on, and relate to their built and natural environments? And how, in turn, do those new environmental dynamics reshape contemporary novels and poems?

Thoreau and Resistance

What do Thoreau's writings offer contemporary modes of social and political resistance?  As we navigate an extended period of political crisis, what can we learn from Thoreau's complex responses to the national politics of his time? This panel will consider Thoreau's legacy for resistance movements with particular attention to the question of the relation between his political and natural history writings. Please send queries or one-page abstracts (for an 18-minute presentation) by January 15, 2018 to: kristen.case@maine.edu.
