OHIO VALLEY SHAKESPEARE CONFERENCE 2018:
KNOWING SHAKESPEARE
YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY, OCTOBER 11-13, YOUNGSTOWN, OH

The conference will explore early modern, modern, and even post-modern, understandings of knowledge, learning, and education linked to Shakespeare and his contemporaries. How do Shakespeare’s texts and/or appropriations of these, represent, conceive, transmit, or make knowledge? What are the nuances of this knowledge, learning, and education, and how do different kinds of knowledge and understanding contest, compete and converse on page, stage, or screen? How do characters in Shakespeare’s plays come to knowledge, learning, or awareness and how do texts, performances and adaptations spark knowing and the making of meaning in audiences—or in our classrooms?

We envision papers, panels, and roundtables, that engage the topic from a broad variety of perspectives and approaches, including, but not limited to:
• Cognition
• Psychological approaches
• Shakespeare as synecdoche for literary learning
• Pedagogy
• Performance and/or adaptation studies
• Ethics and/or aesthetics
• Character criticism
• Presentism and political approaches
• Gender and Sexuality
• Critical Turn(s)
• Shakespeare’s Education
• Humanist and/or Post-Human studies

PLENARY: Scott Newstok, Rhodes College “Islands of Knowledge”

The conference is open to graduate students for inclusion in paper presentation sessions, and to undergraduate students for roundtable discussions. Both graduate students and undergraduate students are encouraged to submit papers for The Rick Smith Memorial Prize competition to Professor Hillary Nunn at nunn@uakron.edu by September 1.

Please send abstracts of 300-500 words to Timothy Francisco at tfrancisco@ysu.edu. Early acceptance deadline for abstracts is June 1 and final deadline is August 15. For more, including The Selected Papers of the Ohio Valley Shakespeare Conference, visit OVSHAKES.ORG
