We are looking for one or two additional members to join a pre-constituted roundtable for the Inernation Girlhood Studies Association 2019 conference at Notre Dame University. Details are in the link below:

Our proposed topic is about cultural depictions of teen girls' sexuality and how films/TV series inflect it differently along lines of race, class, and sexual orientation. Also of concern are the reception of such representations/takeaway experiences that teen girls have with these media.

This panel seeks papers that explore pedagogical strategies for teaching the horror stories of Edgar Allan Poe and his contemporaries. With the looming, true-to-life violence bombarding us every day in the news and in other media outlets, the macabre tales of our favorite authors resonate too well. Teaching the violent and psychologically disturbing short stories of Poe, and others writing in this genre, can be challenging in the current climate of violence in America. Exploring the depths and darkness of humanity through literature can be traumatic for contemporary students who are bombarded with violent words and images every day through social media and news outlets.

This panel proposes to bring together scholars whose work combines ecocriticism and cognitivist approaches to literature for the purpose of considering the potential of the ongoing dialogue between these two fields. Ecocriticism typically looks at how environment is represented and how humans can create an optimal relationship with the non-human world. Cognitive science is generally interested in how humans represent concepts to ourselves and how we make meaning out of those concepts. An understanding of the mind is essential to an understanding of humankind’s relationship to and perception of the non-human environment.
