Transnational Beat Generation

“Whither goest thou, America, in thy shiny car in the night?” asked Jack Kerouac. Apparently across many borders, because that hip, counterculture Beat Generation impact has lasted. This panel invites papers which explore how Beat Generation culture has continued beyond its initial events and publications to infiltrate and influence. Share paper proposals which consider how Beat voices have emerged in subsequent literary, visual, and filmic arts, and/or where Beat aesthetics have crossed borders to be welcomed into new arts practices. Your work might draw on originary work by Beat writers Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, Diane di Prima, Joanne Kyger, Gary Snyder, Amiri Baraka, Bob Kaufman, or visual artists like Jay DeFeo; your work might also aim to expand contexts of the Beat Generation.

Description

Share 15- to 20-minute papers which explore how Beat Generation culture has continued beyond its initial events and publications to influence later cultures, and to emerge in new arts practices. This panel aims to ponder facets of the Transnational Beat Generation.
