Pedagogy: Considering Diversity in the English Curriculum
250- to 500-word proposals, with title, for 15-minute papers/presentations on pedagogical considerations of diversity issues in the English curriculum. Papers should address topics like the following: curricular concerns and imaginative solutions to the development of courses treating ethnic literatures, spiritual orientations, and/or gender-identity readings; selection of materials and modes of presentation; multicultural vs. canonical (and whose canon?); balancing of aesthetic, social, and political issues; multiculturalism and civic engagement/social justice through composition work &/or literary study; managing difficult discussions in the classroom; the impact of diversity issues on students’ writing life and identity &/or on encouraging empathic reading; and the challenges and rewards of a diverse curriculum. The presentation should be integrated with current scholarship regarding the ongoing critical conversation on diversity issues within the discipline.
