Call for Abstract Proposals for an Edited Volume on Religion in the Medieval and Early Modern Marketplace
The editors are seeking abstracts for proposed chapters dealing with religion in the early modern marketplace for a collected volume to be submitted to Routledge Press, who have already expressed an interest in the volume.
We are particularly looking for abstracts which include aspects of religious practice, material culture, and publication, in addition to other possible interpretations of religion or religious culture. Our understanding of “marketplace” for this volume is intentionally broad, and may incorporate the marketplace of ideas, a literal market or shop, or a broader interpretation of “marketplace.” We are also interested in a variety of disciplinary and geographic loci for this volume, including Europe, England (and other parts of the now-UK), Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, as well as the Americas for the periods described as “medieval,” “early modern,” or “Renaissance.” We are interested in proposals from scholars across multiple disciplines, including (but certainly not limited to) literature, history, religious studies, theology, art history, music history, and cultural studies of a variety of languages and regions.
Our vision for the volume is to include a sampling from a variety of disciplines, periods, and regions, to be brought together by the collective theme of religion in the marketplace—we anticipate that the volume will cater itself into sections based on elements such as publications and texts, material objects, and spiritual “markets,” but we will determine such categories based on the abstracts we receive. We are open to a variety of interpretations of both “religion” and “marketplace,” and encourage abstracts which use unique as well as traditional approaches and methodologies.
