Towards Equitable Language Instruction for the Intercultural Classroom (NeMLA 2020)
This panel session invites an examination of pedagogical adaptations at the departmental, class, or individual student level, highlighting opportunities to recognize and include different types of learners.
Presentations should focus on trends in foreign language pedagogy, highlighting strategies for departments and teachers to clarify their instruction and assessment goals, working towards improved learning experiences for all learners. Emphasis will be placed on highlighting how language educators can work towards providing a fair playing field for students, including those with varied cultural and/or ethnic background(s). Aspects of identity such as different ways of being abled, personality type, and socioeconomic background may also be addressed. Presenters are encouraged to adopt a critical view towards any approaches suggesting the solution to inequitable learning environments is to convince all participants to conform. By discussing changes to pedagogical practices such as curriculum choice, universal design, multimodal assignments, and assessment reviews, presenters should describe adaptations and innovations to language instruction leading to equitable language pedagogy.
