Panel Title: Queer Ruptures: Alternative Narrative Praxis as Un/Recovering Histories


In Mourning Sex, Peggy Phelan argues that “something substantial can be made from the outline left after the body has disappeared.” She goes on to describe this as an “affective outline of what we’ve lost [that] might bring us closer to the bodies we want still to touch.” This panel is concerned with the ‘affective outline,’ where projects examine how late-twentieth-century U.S. womxn artists and filmmakers attempt to investigate and articulate the absencing and presencing of bodies and their histories. In particular, this panel seeks projects that discuss traumatic histories, subjects, and events, and strive to illuminate and/or perform a reparative approach of some kind. As Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick understood queer genres like camp to be “communal, historically dense explorations of a variety of reparative practices,” these papers explore both the textures of different historical densities and expose or uncover the associated range of reparative practices generated by such densities (Touching Feeling). This work is rooted in Sara Ahmed’s understanding of ‘hearing’ as being related to elements of witness and testimony, or, as Cathy Caruth would argue, questions of address: Who is being addressed, or not, and why? Who can access the address, and in what ways? How much of the address can be articulated, and then heard? As Ahmed explains hearing takes place “in between our mouths and our ears, in the very proximity and multiplicity of this [ethical] encounter,” these papers strive to investigate how an ‘in between’ can be cultivated and what ranges of proximities and multiplicities it can render (Strange Encounters). This aim is to echo José Esteban Muñoz’s understanding of ‘queerness’ as an insistence on the potentiality or possibility for another world, where the mode of desire allows one to “see and feel beyond the quagmire of the present” (Cruising Utopia). Subsequently, this panel will work to identify queered narrative praxis as reparative means to articulating the multiplicities of un/recovering traumatic histories. 


Papers concerned with the following topics are welcome:

  • Techniques of ‘70s-’90s womxn’s filmmaking
  • Questions of address, testimony, witness
  • Alternatives to traditional fields or genres, especially in regards to documentary filmmaking
  • Queered temporalities
  • Queered narration 
  • Radical modes of disruption 
  • Decolonial praxis
  • Explorations of queer affect, performativity, and/or trauma studies
