ACLA 2020 Seminar, Sheraton Grand Hotel in Chicago, March 19th-22nd, 2020

This seminar poses literary translation as an integral part of our work as comparatists. Recognizing the dearth of opportunities to discuss translation practice, this ACLA seminar will take a workshop format to allow participants to address specific translation-related questions that they have been facing in their own work. Rather than a formal presentation, each participant will receive focused feedback on their translation. We will interrogate how translation informs our critical practice as scholars and share ways to advocate for the importance of translation within the academy.

In lieu of an abstract, please submit a short description of the text that you are translating and what you hope to get out of the workshop. Participants will be asked to circulate a brief excerpt of a pre-publication draft of a translation in progress (3-5 pages) as well as a short critical introduction and list of areas that they would like feedback on so we can make the most of our time together. These materials will be circulated before the seminar and participants are expected to read and make comments on all drafts before the conference. During the workshop, instead of presentations, we will discuss the select issues that each translator has brought to the table and provide focused feedback. Participants should be prepared to make detailed comments on other participant’s drafts addressing the specific issues raised by the translator.

Potential participants are invited to contact organizer Kate Costello (kate.costello@orinst.ox.ac.uk) before submission.

Submissions due August 31, at 9:00 AM Eastern through the ACLA portal.
