(Re)Focus on Landscape and Travelogue Forms in Avant-garde and Experimental Film

“Transsexualité, transidentité: un tabou français?” (“Transsexuality, transidentity: a French taboo?”[1]): such was the title chosen by the online French news magazine France Info for an article published in 2015 that discussed the lack of visibility trans(gender/sexual) people still experience in French society. Indeed, there has been an increasing visibility of trans individuals in film and TV in recent years.

This Conference marks the 180th anniversary of Thomas Hardy's birth. Confirmed lecturers include Gillian Beer, Pamela Gilbert, Michael Irwin, Richard Nemesvari and Gregory Tate. Lectures and conference papers will be supplemented by a wide variety of excursions and entertainments relating to the local context which Hardy’s work celebrates, and from which it emerged. Paper proposals (max 300 word) are welcome on any aspect of Hardy’s life, work and legacy. Papers should be planned for delivery times of a maximum of 20 minutes (approximately 2000 words).

Spirituality recognises that there is more to reality than just the material world. The intuition that our lives have meaning and are part of something bigger is a powerful motivator for us to cultivate our spiritual side. The mystical experiences and beliefs that arise from this engagement can stimulate our imagination in unexpected ways. Feelings of transcendence and awe have inspired creative people, artists, writers and composers throughout the ages, and continue to influence cultures around the world. Spirituality has certainly not gone away in a hyper-connected age, but finds new modes of expression and practice.

We welcome short papers addressing any aspect of New York School poetry, art, and writing for the inaugural meeting of the New York School Studies Association (NYSSA). This event builds on the research network scholars and poets began to form during the illuminating New Work on the New York School symposium and poetry evening held at the University of Birmingham in 2018. We hope it will be the second international meeting of many.
