The Confluence: Octavia E. Butler at the Intersection of Cultural Critique and Climate Collapse

September 11-13, 2020

A confluence is the place where two rivers meet. It is a place of not only great energy but great power and creativity. Located at one of the great confluences,  the Twin Cities occupy this place called Bdote – “where two waters come together” – that is sacred to the Dakota people. The Octavia E. Butler Literary Society invites you to join us at this sacred place of power and creativity for the third biennial conference where we will feature work honoring Butler. Our host is St. Catherine University in St. Paul MN.

PLATFORM: Theatres of Labour

updated:
Monday, February 10, 2020 - 3:45pm
Lisa Moravec
deadline for submissions:
Saturday, February 15, 2020

This forthcoming issue of Platform considers labour through the creation and analysis of theatre and performance. We follow Kathi Weeks’s (2011) contention that the lived experiences of work have thus far received little attention in political and cultural theory and propose that the material and aesthetic space of theatre can illuminate this daily and bodily dimension of work. In theatrical labour, aesthetic considerations link both the practice of making and the practices of performance. Yet, studies of the performance of work have also been critiqued for conflating dimensions of practice and labour (Wikström 2012). With these tensions in mind, this issue aims to examine the various theatres of labour.

We have been closely monitoring the situation in relation to coronavirus (COVID-19) and its potential impact upon the ‘Adaptation in the Humanities’ conference in early October 2020.

Based on current Australian Government advice, we have decided to postpone the conference until 2021.

We are mindful of uncertainty prompted by the outbreak and cannot predict what impact it will have in the coming weeks and months.

Our primary concern is the health and safety of all involved in the conference, and we are aware of the need to ensure the conference is as safe an environment as possible for all.
