Sego Graduate Student Language and Culture Conference
Department of World Languages and Cultures at the University of Utah
Closer Together-Further Apart: Cross-Cultural Perspectives in Academia

April 10-11, 2020

The graduate students of the Department of World Languages and Cultures at the
University of Utah are soliciting presentations related to the theme of cross-cultural
perspectives in academia. As spaces of higher education become more diverse, the need to
produce, theorize, and analyze inter-cultural exchange in academic settings across
disciplines grows. In the areas of globalization and multiplicity of cultural avenues,
academia is progressing toward more open-ended pedagogical approaches that create
real-world solutions to current problems. The inclusion of various voices across the
spectrum allows for a more comprehensive outlook and proliferation of interdisciplinary
discourses. Papers may approach cross-cultural perspectives through pedagogical, literary,
and interdisciplinary lenses. The Sego Conference welcomes ideas that thrive in and
emerge from these intersections and open up discussions about topics that explore the
various nuances of theory and practice.

Abstracts in English of no more than 300 words should be sent to sego@utah.edu by
Friday, March 13th, 2020. Participants will be notified by March 20th, 2020.

Papers might address:
Cultural performance and identity
Right to narrate stories and study others’ stories
Culture as a living, changing construct
Analyzing from in and outside the culture
Approaching culture, representation and language in the classroom
Identity as it relates to language and culture
