LITERARY AND ARTISTIC MAGAZINES IN THE AMERICAS IN THE 20TH CENTURY: A TRANSAMERICAN PERSPECTIVE

While the literary and artistic magazines from various regions of the Americas and the Caribbean have been the topic of books, monographs and case studies, often in connection with Europe —particularly since the “material turn” in the humanities— they have seldom been examined from a trans-American angle.

By inviting contributions that confront diverse cultural and linguistic contexts from a continental perspective, this panel session seeks to investigate our methodological and theoretical understanding of the subject, with a view to fostering future collaborative work. By adopting a trans-American point of view, we aim to identify junctures where periodicals produced in different places and/or at different, times during the 20th century illuminatingly converge and diverge, and undergo transformation.

Topics include, but are not limited to, the circulation of texts, people and ideas; editorial practices (translation, illustration, intermediality, layout, etc.), aesthetics and politics, denationalization and/or renationalization processes; collaborations and networks; and the role of mainstream magazines and newspapers. All these questions may be addressed using multiple disciplinary approaches belonging to the humanities (literature, literary and cultural history, book and publishing history, art history, graphic arts, among others).
