Using Contemporary Theory to Teach the Middle Ages
Using Contemporary Theory to Teach the Middle Ages
Submission Deadline: December 1
Session February 7, 2:00 (Central)
In the last few decades, courses on the Middle Ages and medieval studies programs have been either cut or severely restricted in the United States. In fact, recently a variety of humanities programs have been on the chopping block, forcing and providing an opportunity for specialists in medieval studies to integrate our specialties into other courses. This year’s Illinois Medieval Association Symposium seeks to explore issues incorporating medieval studies into our curricula. This session seeks papers that explore issues, opportunities, and innovations in teaching the Middle Ages using any contemporary theory or combination of cultural/literary theories. What advantages does cultural/literary theory have over other methods of addressing the medieval period in the classroom? How might we introduce students to theory while maintaining a focus on the medieval subject matter? Papers on any aspect of teaching the Middle Ages with theory are welcome.
Submit full session or paper proposals (no more than 300 words) to mwgeorge.51@gmail.com no later than December 1, 2024.
