Medieval English teaching and scholarship are now, quite possibly, at their most global in their history. Digital resources, well-developed library and museum collections, and universities around the globe have together ensured that many, if not most, of those scholars who work on the English Middle Ages can do much of their work from somewhere other than England. Simultaneously, scholars from other periods with secondary medieval research interests have readier access than ever before to medieval art, literature, and historical artefacts. Despite such decreased period and geographic barriers, many little-discussed challenges (and possibilities) remain for such scholars–hence this session.
This virtual roundtable session invites scholars to reflect on their experiences and envisage new possibilities around teaching and studying the Middle Ages either 1) as scholars of medieval England not living and working in England, or 2) as scholars who work primarily on other periods, but have secondary research or teaching interests in the Middle Ages. What are the particular challenges? What are the exciting possibilities? What is it like to study or teach the English Middle Ages from without?
