This panel invites contributions that examine how food and foodways shape and reflect cultural knowledge across time and place, with particular attention to the relationships among foodways, memory, migration, identity, cultural heritage, and community formation.

Proposals are welcome from a range of disciplinary and professional perspectives that explore food and cultural identity in literature, cinema, and other forms of media; oral history projects; mapping initiatives; community archives and digital collections; public-facing scholarship; and pedagogical approaches to Food Studies. The panel also invites discussion of emerging technologies and methodologies that offer new ways of researching, representing, and engaging with foodways and cultural heritage, while expanding opportunities for the communication and exchange of cultural knowledge.

Whether through literary and cinematic representation, historical research, oral histories, or other forms of cultural production and inquiry, food-centred scholarship offers valuable insights into the ways individuals and communities understand and communicate culture across generations and geographies. In keeping with the conference theme, Empowering Communities, this session considers how foodways can serve as sites of cultural expression, knowledge-sharing, and collective memory, while encouraging reflection on questions of belonging, exchange, continuity, and cultural change.
