Panel Chair: Noah Gallego, M.A.Contact: noahrgallego@gmail.comDates: March 6 - 9, 2027Location: Salve Regina University, Newport, Rhode Island While the exact calendrical origin of punk rock is nebulous, many credit 1977 as year zero. 1977 saw the release of the eponymous debut album of “the only band that matters,” The Clash, among several other iconic releases, including but not limited to: The Sex Pistols’ Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols, The Ramones’ Rocket to Russia, Talking Heads' Talking Heads: 77, The Damned’s Damned Damned Damned, and The Runaways’ Queens of Noise. 2027, then, marks the fiftieth anniversary of this genre’s cacophonous birth. Consistent with this year’s conference theme of “Empowering Communities” is punk’s emphasis on agency and community-driven action. Punk has always compelled audiences to enact change and confront issues like facism, racism, sexism, queerphobia, and other forms of discrimination through DIY and direct action. Thus, in the spirit of this jubilee as well as the conference theme, this panel invites scholars from across the disciplines and stages in their academic career to present critical explorations of any aspect of punk, including music, literature, fashion, philosophy, art, and more. Candidates are especially encouraged to examine punk’s intersections with race, disability, gender and sexuality, national identity, the environment, and other discursive axes in the interest of highlighting its political efficacy across various media. Topics for presentations need not be limited to ’77 bands and are welcome and encouraged to examine music and other cultural artifacts outside of the 1970s and the West. Please submit through the proper NeMLA portal: https://cfplist.com/nemla/Home/S/22310
