CFP: [Film] One-Day ymposium: âWhatâs occurring?â: Gavin and Stacey and the Contemporary Sitcom

>From Coal House to Dr Who, South Wales has played host to a range of
quality television of late, and this one-day Symposium, to be held at
ATRiuM, University of Glamorgan, Cardiff, on April 3rd 2009, turns due
attention to the BBC’s BAFTA Award winning Gavin and Stacey.

Andy Medhurst (author of A National Joke: Popular Comedy and English
Cultural Identities) will open the Symposium with a paper entitled ‘Far
East and Wild West: Mapping Comic Traditions in Gavin and Stacey’, and
Welsh media journal Cyfrwng will host the closing event.

Papers are invited on, though not restricted to, Gavin and Stacey and the
following topics:

Humour and the Celtic Nations
Welsh identity and the sitcom
Regionality and the sitcom
The contemporary sitcom form
Representations of gender

The deadline for 500 word proposals is Friday 30th January, 2009.
