Beyond Pathology: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Dementia Studies in Humanities
Special Call for Book Chapters
We are pleased to announce a Special Call for Book Chapters for the forthcoming edited volume Beyond Pathology: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Dementia Studies in Humanities, which brings together interdisciplinary humanities scholarship that reconceptualises dementia through diverse representations of lived, narrated, and mediated experiences of the condition.
To strengthen the volume’s cross-cultural ambition, the editors invite a limited number of additional chapters that foreground cultural representations of dementia in South Asian literary and other traditions, including, but not limited to, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and South Asian diasporic communities.
Chapters should engage substantively with one or more strands of the volume's shared framework:
- Subjectivity: approaching the person living with dementia as a narrating subject and site of meaning-making, not solely as an object of clinical or familial concern.
- Relational embodiment: attending to embodied experience as constituted within networks of kinship, care, and community, rather than as an isolated, individualist decline.
- Agency: examining how literary and cultural forms register, restore, or complicate the agency of individuals living with dementia, while resisting a reduction to passive patienthood.
We welcome original book chapters covering, but not limited to, the following themes:
- Film, television and the politics of representing dementia on screen
- Multilingualism and the linguistic mediation of dementia
- Gender and relational embodiment
- Food, memory, and the sensory body
- Temporality and agency
- Altered consciousness, hallucination, and liminal states
- Digital archives, memory-assist technologies, and distributed selfhood
- Landscape, homeland, and ecological metaphors of memory
Deadline for abstract (350 words) Submission: 25 August 2026
Please submit your abstract via email to studiesdementia@gmail.com
The volume is currently under discussion with a leading publisher.
