Food and Eating: Ecofeminist Perspectives in 19th-Century Italian and =20=

European Literature

This panel invites papers that examine the role of food, eating, and =20
hunger in 19th-century Italian and European literature and culture, =20
in particular, from an Ecofeminist perspective. The panel asks these =20
questions: how do food, eating, and hunger, for example, in Carlo =20
Collodi=92s Pinocchio or Mary Shelley=92s Frankenstein, elide gender =
and/=20
or species constructs and how does such an elision reflect the =20
construction of nation? How do food paradigms, hierarchies, and =20
consumption reinforce or challenge the androcentric and =20
anthropocentric thinking of dominant culture during industrialization =20=

and unification? Although food, eating, and the status of animals =20
have become the subject of vigorous, critical inquiry in contemporary =20=

Italian and American culture (for example, Mad Cow Disease, Foodism, =20
the Slow Food Movement, and Vegetarianism) and consumption and =20
cannibalism have sparked provocative, academic debate in postcolonial =20=

studies, the realm of the alimentary is seldom approached in 19th-=20
century literature as a construct of species or from an Ecofeminist =20
viewpoint. Various critical and theoretical approaches and =20
methodologies, including cross-cultural viewpoints, are welcome, even =20=

if applications of Ecofeminist theory are preferred. Readings of =20
noncanonical as well as canonical texts are also welcome. David Del =20
