CFP: Gender and Ethnicity in Tolkien (Kalamazoo, 9-15-2006; 5-10-13-07)

Gender and Ethnicity in Tolkien

Proposals on Tolkien's legendarium, including but not limited to The Lord of
the Rings, are sought for a sponsored session on "Gender and Ethnicity in
Tolkien" for the 2007 International Congress on medieval studies.

While scholarly work on feminist/gender issues in The Lord of the Rings has
been published, as has work on constructions of "race" in the novel, there
is little work that attempts to focus on the intersections of gender and
ethnicity. Thus, gender is often discussed solely in heterosexist and
Anglo-American terms, and "race" is considered as part of a black/white
binary.

This session invites proposals for papers analyzing how gender and sexual
identity are constructed in the different cultures of Middle-earth or how
"cultures" are constructed as gendered.

Topics might include but are not limited to:

Gendered/Ethnic space in Tolkien

Bodies in Tolkien

Transnational/postcolonial feminist readings of Tolkien

Queering Tolkien

The deadline is September 15, 2006.

A complete proposal is an abstract of no more than 300 words plus the
completed Abstract Cover Sheet which can be found in pdf format on the
Congress web site at:
