We are excited to share a CFP for a roundtable we are chairing at NeMLA 2027: “Creating Community in the AI Age: Empowerment in English Classrooms.”The more we talk about AI in education, the more I find myself thinking about what we don’t want to lose. What happens to connection and a sense of belonging in our classrooms? How can literature and writing still bring people together, encourage empathy where students feel that their voices matter?

This roundtable wants to explore these questions by inviting scholars and teachers who cares about community-building in college English classrooms. No matter if it’s literature, writing, classroom discussion or digital storytelling, multimodal composition, AI-supported collaboration, or intentionally limiting technology to protect human presence and original thinking. We are especially excited to hear about what people are actually doing in their classrooms: practices, experiments, questions, successes and even things that haven’t worked quite as expected. If these are questions you’ve been thinking about too, we’d love to have you join the conversation in Newport!
