TLA Magazine, the digital literary magazine of The Literary Archive, invites submissions for its inaugural issue, scheduled for publication in December 2026.

The magazine provides a space for creative, critical, archival, and reflective writing that engages with literature, books, memory, reading, translation, cultural history, and contemporary literary life. It seeks to bring together emerging and established writers, students, researchers, critics, translators, readers, collectors, and literary practitioners from different countries and intellectual traditions.

The inaugural issue is intentionally open-themed. We welcome work that explores literature in its widest cultural, historical, creative, and material forms.

Possible areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

• literature, memory, and cultural inheritance;
• books as material, historical, and emotional objects;
• archives, libraries, manuscripts, maps, and inherited collections;
• forgotten, neglected, or rediscovered texts;
• reading practices and readerly experience;
• literary culture across regions and languages;
• translation and cultural exchange;
• marginalia, inscriptions, ownership marks, and book histories;
• contemporary fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction;
• literary criticism and cultural commentary;
• interviews and conversations with writers, scholars, translators, collectors, librarians, publishers, and artists;
• reflections on literary institutions, publishing, teaching, and research;
• archival discoveries and personal histories connected with books;
• emerging voices and new directions in literary culture.

Accepted Categories

Poetry

Contributors may submit up to five poems in a single document. Original formatting and spacing should be preserved.

Fiction

We welcome short fiction of approximately 1,500–5,000 words.

Flash Fiction

Submissions should not exceed 1,000 words.

Creative Nonfiction and Literary Memoir

Submissions should normally be between 1,500 and 4,000 words.

Essays and Literary Criticism

Critical essays, cultural commentary, and reflective literary writing should normally be between 2,000 and 4,000 words.

Research Articles

Research-based submissions should normally be between 3,000 and 6,000 words.

Review Essays

Review essays examining one or more books, authors, debates, or literary developments should be between 1,500 and 3,000 words.

Book Reviews

Individual book reviews should be between 800 and 1,500 words.

Interviews and Literary Conversations

Interviews and edited conversations should normally be between 1,500 and 4,000 words.

Translations

We welcome translations of poetry, fiction, literary nonfiction, essays, and other relevant texts. Translations should be accompanied by:

• the original text;
• complete publication details;
• a translator’s note where appropriate;
• written permission from the copyright holder where the original work is not in the public domain.

Archival Notes and Discoveries

Short pieces presenting archival materials, rare books, inscriptions, maps, manuscripts, marginalia, personal collections, or other literary objects should be between 800 and 2,000 words.

Reflections on Books, Reading, and Literary Culture

Personal, scholarly, or public-facing reflections should normally be between 1,000 and 2,500 words.

Submission Format

Submissions must:

• be uploaded as a Microsoft Word .doc or .docx file;
• use a readable 12-point font;
• be double-spaced, except poetry where original formatting should be maintained;
• use one-inch margins;
• include page numbers;
• include a clear title;
• follow the relevant word limit;
• be carefully proofread before submission.

Originality and Previously Published Work

TLA Magazine considers previously unpublished work.

Material already published in print, on another magazine or journal website, on a personal blog, in a public institutional repository, or on a public social-media platform may be treated as previously published.

Translations may be considered where the original text has previously appeared, provided that:

• the submitted translation is unpublished;
• the translator has obtained the necessary permissions;
• the original source is fully acknowledged.

Simultaneous Submissions

Simultaneous submissions are accepted.

Contributors must inform the editorial team immediately if a submitted work is accepted elsewhere. The work should then be withdrawn from consideration at TLA Magazine.

Editorial Review Process

The editorial process will normally follow this sequence:

Received → Initial Screening → Internal Editorial Review → Revision Requested → Accepted → Copyediting → Proofreading → Online Publication → Included in the Completed Issue

Expected Response Time

Contributors should normally receive an initial editorial decision within four to six weeks of submission. 

Because of the anticipated volume of submissions, the editorial team may not be able to provide detailed feedback on every declined manuscript.

Publication Model

The inaugural issue will be published as a special standalone issue in December 2026.

After the inaugural issue, TLA Magazine will follow a biannual structure:

• Volume 1, Issue 1: January–June 2027
• Volume 1, Issue 2: July–December 2027

The magazine will use a rolling publication model. Accepted contributions may be published individually online after completing editorial review, revision, copyediting, and proofreading. At the end of each six-month publication period, all contributions will be formally collected as a completed issue.

Copyright and Publication Rights

Authors retain copyright in their work.

Upon acceptance, contributors grant TLA Magazine:

• the right of first publication;
• the non-exclusive right to publish the work digitally;
• the right to preserve the work in the magazine’s online archive;
• the right to include the work in the completed issue;
• the right to use the title, contributor name, brief extracts, and accompanying images for promotion, indexing, and publicity.

Authors may republish their work after its appearance in TLA Magazine, provided that the original publication is acknowledged.

Plagiarism and Publication Ethics

TLA Magazine follows a strict policy against:

• plagiarism;
• unattributed borrowing;
• fabricated references or quotations;
• falsification of evidence;
• duplicate publication;
• copyright infringement;
• misrepresentation of authorship;
• invented archival or bibliographical information.

Submissions may be screened using plagiarism-detection software.

The magazine reserves the right to:

• reject a manuscript containing unattributed or improperly sourced material;
• request documentation or clarification;
• withdraw an acceptance where an ethical concern is identified;
• correct or remove published material where serious misconduct is established.

Authors must accurately acknowledge all sources, collaborators, translators, interview participants, permissions, and funding support.

Generative-AI Policy

Submissions generated substantially or entirely through generative artificial-intelligence tools will not be accepted.

Generative-AI systems must not be used to:

• produce the principal argument or creative content;
• invent quotations, references, data, sources, or archival information;
• generate false interviews, testimonies, or research findings;
• paraphrase sources in ways that conceal plagiarism;
• replace the contributor’s original intellectual or creative contribution.

Limited use for spelling, grammar, accessibility, or language support should be disclosed where it has materially influenced the submitted work.

Contributors remain fully responsible for:

• the originality of their submissions;
• the accuracy of all claims;
• the authenticity of all sources and evidence;
• compliance with copyright and ethical requirements;
• the complete disclosure of relevant AI-assisted use.

AI systems cannot be listed as authors or co-authors.

The editorial team may ask contributors to explain how generative or AI-assisted tools were used. Failure to disclose substantial use may result in rejection or withdrawal of publication.
