William Blake in 2027
Papers on any aspect of William Blake’s poetry and composite art are welcome on this 200th anniversary of his death and the 270th of his birth for the NEMLA conference The 58th Annual Northeast Modern Language Association Convention will take place from March 6–9, 2027, at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island. Some fruitful speculations might include: how the attempt to encompass Blake’s “indeterminate texts” (lack of a clearly definitive final edition) has led to new approaches in criticism; how his combination of text and image that his self-devised and controlled “illuminated printing” allowed him to develop has broadened to encompass and explicate graphic novels and other postmodern media; the effect of the fierce identification forged between many influential poets like Yeats and Ginsberg, and singers/lyricists/poets Patti Smith and Van Morrison and Blake (who make Blake over in their image); and finally, how all of the phenomena aforementioned bring up the question, if William Blake is the Shakespeare of the 21st century, can Blake be as central to cultural and literary studies in the next centuries as Shakespeare has been until now?
