URGENT CFP

Panel: Trans-cultural Influences, Interpretations, and Encounters: The
Transatlantic Experience

Event: NEMLA 2008 Convention, Buffalo, NY, April 10th – 13th, 2008.

>From the earliest encounter[s] and settlement[s] the transatlantic
experience was characterized by profound [intense] inter-cultural and
trans-geographic experiences, influences, interpretations, and conflicts.
In the literary-cultural and theoretical fields this has generated a
dynamic flow of cultural capital between the worlds on either side of the
Atlantic, whose interaction is inscribed, across history, in their
cultural production. One can chart multiple versions of the psycho-
geography of such interrelations, and yet there remain striking individual
psycho-geographies emerging from the trans-cultural encounters. The field
is broad: from Keats' reception in America to that of the Beatles;
Twain’s, Hawthorne's, Emerson's and Cather’s thoughts on travelling to
Britain and Europe; Arnold's and Dickens' reflections on travels in the
US; Bergson's reception in both Britain and America; Martin Amis’
schooling and later thoughts of North America; Sam Shephard’s time in
London. The panel seeks fruitful theoretical readings of the various
possibilities and expressions (but also the limits) of Trans-cultural
Influence, from the personal to the political, the aesthetic to the
ideological, and the imagined to the real.
