CALL FOR PROPOSALS
°
Re-Visioning the Culture Wars—From Mapplethorpe to the Pelosi Agenda:
The Homo(n)e(u)rotic Politics of American Culture
°
2008 Popular Culture Association & American Culture Association Annual
Conference
March 19-22, 2008
San Francisco , California
°
The Popular Culture Association and the American Culture Association will
hold their joint annual conference at the San Francisco Marriott between
March 19-22, 2008. The conference serves as an important site of
creative, intellectual, and cultural exchange and encourages a wide
variety of participants to stimulate dialogue across disciplines. The
Visual Culture strand of the PCA/ACA Conference is an important element
of the conference and encourages presentations in traditional, non-
traditional, and emerging areas of study. We are currently seeking
proposals for a panel that examines the interaction of visual cultures
with the politics of the on-going “culture wars.” We will use as our
basis Pat Buchanan’s assertion from 1992 that, “There is a religious war
going on in our country for the soul of America. It is a cultural war, as
critical to the kind of nation we will one day be as was the Cold War
itself.” The panel will explore the degree to which the religious right
utilized visual media to fuel a conservative movement whose effects
continue to be felt today. Papers and presentations are welcome from a
variety of disciplines that address the interplay between visual media
and the “culture wars” and its wider repercussions.

Please submit via e-mail a 250-word abstract for your proposed
presentation no later than November 9, 2007, to Jeffrey L. Schneider,
panel chair, at jschneider_at_stlcc.edu and Royce W. Smith, Visual Culture
Chair for the Popular Culture Association, at royce.smith_at_wichita.edu.
Please do not hesitate to e-mail any questions you might have regarding
this exciting opportunity.
