Churches In Legend & Tradition

This two-day conference at the Bishop’s Palace, Wells, Somerset, will be
held on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st September 2008 as the third
Legendary Weekend of the Folklore Society. We'd like to hear from anyone
who can attend and present a paper – folklorists, clergy, singers, craft
workers, anthropologists, performers, pilgrims, and historians.

The church and its festivals are at the heart of the community from birth
to burial. We push the door ajar to catch echoes of West Gallery music
under the faded ribbons of maiden’s garlands, among the painted
admonitions to bellringers and the tombs of giants. The church site might
be a place of reconciliation or of conflict over games, customs and
charities, but it was always magic. From the healing power of sacrament
silver to the oil from the bells, its very fragments were charged with
otherworldly powers. Whether clipping the church or pelting the parson,
people made their own meanings out of the sacred building. Come and join
us for a weekend exploring folk-religion in the majestic setting of a
medieval palace.

Presentations, which should be 20 minutes long, can take the form of
talks, performances, or DVD. There will be a limited number of
opportunities for art installations. The main event will take place on
Saturday with additional material and site visits on Sunday.

If you would like to present a paper or performance, please send a 250-
word abstract or details to:
