And Struggle: Classical to Contemporary
Eleventh Annual Interdisciplinary McCleary Symposium
April 8-9, 2009

The Department of English at Texas Southern University will host the
Eleventh Annual Interdisciplinary McCleary Symposium, April 8-9, 2009,
Houston, Texas. The general topic of the presentations is “Resistance:
The Literature of Social Protest and Struggle: Classical to
Contemporary.” Scholarly research and presentations are invited that
cover a wide area of interest, including but not limited to the following:

• Ancient texts (Lysistrata, Antigone, Prometheus, and others)
• Slave narratives
• Resistance to colonialism
• Negritude Writers resisting Eurocentrism
• Anglo writers and Black resistance
• Uneasy alliances: Black writers and communism
• Literature and war
• Literature and economic struggles
• Social and political function of art
• Philosophical change and revolution
• The anti-war novel and short story
Specific areas of interest include literature and culture, women’s
studies, drama, music, art, song, painting, historical viewpoints,
political economics, and politics. Abstracts of 300 words or less are
