A CALL FOR PAPERS.

Reading America: New Perspectives on the American Novel.

(abstracts, 06/23/06; contributions, 10/01/06)

Proposals are solicited for contributions to an edited volume of essays on the
20th Century American novel. Following the enormous success of "America
Actually", the British Association for American Studies Postgraduate Conference
2005 held at the University of Sheffield, it seemed clear that a forum was
needed for the great number of energetic reappraisals of 20th century American
literature that surfaced. This proposed volume will concentrate specifically on
the 20th century American novel, seeking to explore its core developments from
a range of different historical, cultural and stylistic perspectives.

Submissions should focus on a single American novelist from any period or
movement of the 20th Century. Contributors are encouraged to reinterpret all
areas of the canon in the light of shifts in literary and cultural theory,
formal experimentation, and/or developments in ethnic and minority literature.
All approaches will be considered.

We anticipate submissions on canonical authors (for example, but not limited to,
Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Ellison) as well as ‘marginal’ and/or more contemporary
authors (for example, but not limited to, Sandra Cisneros, Jay McInerney,
Jonathan Franzen, Louise Erdrich). Our aim is to compile a comprehensive but
challenging reassessment of the American novel’s multifaceted development
through the 20th century that will be of use to scholars and students alike.

Please register your interest by submitting a 300 word abstract and a brief CV
to the editors by the deadline of June 23rd 2006 (please send abstracts via
email attachment). Finished articles of 5000-6000 words are due October 1st
2006. If you have any queries, please feel free to contact the editors at:
