CFP: Victory Culture

(dis)junctions: lost in translation
University of California, Riverside

April 7-8, 2006

This panel will consist of papers concerning the rhetoric around the
American narrative and Victory Culture. What narratives of history have
contributed to the American consciousness as a culture of victory?

-What are the major groundworks which have either disturbed or buttressed
the American vision of a victory culture? The cowboy/Indian narrative,
Rambo, etc.

-narratives of political victory (i.e. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, or the
more recent TV series The West Wing),

-national consciousness concerning the American war story, contemporary new=
s
representations of war.

-How do these presentations immobilize history?
-How do alternate narratives coincide with the vision of America as a
Victory Culture? i.e Fahrenheit 911, the Kinsey Report, etc.
