Globalization as Culture?

The UCLA Department of Spanish and Portuguese Literature and
Linguistics is proud to announce its 3rd Annual Graduate Student
Conference: "Globalization as
Culture?" to be held all day Friday, April 28, 2006 in Royce Hall 306,
UCLA. The distinguished keynote speaker will be Prof. Francine R.
Masiello from University of California Berkeley.

The conference will explore interdisciplinary conjunctions between the
various mechanisms and manifestations of cultural globalization /
globalization of culture. We invite considerations of culture as a
socio-political vehicle for expansion and / or transformation, along
consecutive historical cycles of globalization. We encourage
submissions from all disciplines in dialogue with the Luso-Hispanic
world, including but not limited to: literature, linguistics, political
science, economics, cultural and media studies, art and architecture,
religious studies, anthropology, history, comparative literature,
philosophy,
critical theory and area studies.

Possible themes for the conference include, but are not exclusively
limited to:

• Woman's position (feminist proposal) • Human rights
(human trafficking, minority groups)
• Violence • Poverty • Immigration and diaspora •
       Mass media • Cultures of consumption • Pop culture
• Tourism • Civil society • Cultures of resistance
• Memory • Changing concepts of beauty • Cultural
hybridity • Border literatures / cultures • New concepts
of the nation • Eroticism

Papers and abstracts may be presented in Spanish, Portuguese or English.

The conference hall will be equipped with resources for digital and
standard projection of images and sound, such as: VHS, DVD, CDs,
audiotapes, overhead transparencies and slides. Please indicate at the
end of your abstract whether or not you intend to make use of any of
these resources.

Submissions should include:

1) a separate page with your name, the title of your paper, your
academic affiliation, contact information (office or home phone number
& an e-mail address) and your CV / Resume

2) a cover letter

3) an abstract (do not include any personal information in the abstract)
