UPDATE: Theorizing Genre Fiction (grad) (2/16/07; (dis)junctions, 4/6/07-4/7/07)

This call for papers is for a proposed panel to be held at (dis)junctions 2007: Malappropriation Nation at the University of California Riverside’s 14th Annual Humanities Graduate Conference on April 6-7, 2007.

While the literary canon has been changing to include a broader range of works, most of the books that people actually read (mystery, science fiction and fantasy, romance), have remained on the outside looking in. Participants are invited to submit critical works that deal with the application of literary theory to works that have been considered to be outside of the canon and consigned to the often-dismissed field of genre fiction. Possible topics include, but by no means are limited to:
        Mystery
        Pulp novels
        Horror
        Romance
        Canon formation
        Reading in the 21st century

Abstracts of 250-300 words should be submitted by email to michael.podolny_at_email.ucr.edu by the deadline of February 16, 2007. Please include all contact information and institution affiliation.
