With Pen in Hand:
A Portrait of a Discipline

General Call for Papers

The English Department of Virginia Tech welcomes the submission of abstracts from all
disciplines on all topics addressing writing, literature, and culture for the annual graduate
conference, With Pen in Hand, taking place April 11th and 12th, 2008. This year’s topic is “A
Portrait of a Discipline.”

To welcome the ever-growing MFA program in this department, this year’s conference will
include panels regarding creative writing – both the practice and the theory. We encourage
submissions concerning the theoretical side of creative writing.

The sub-title for this year’s conference will hopefully encourage various different specialties
across the disciplines to come together and, through the merging of those disciplines, make
evident the changing landscape of the university today.

Recent panels have included:

• Cultural Studies
• Gender Studies
• Critical Theory
• Professional and Technical Writing
• Pedagogy
• Rhetoric and Composition
• All periods and genres of literature (including Medieval, Renaissance, 18th, 19th, and 20th
century, Children’s Literature)

Presentations will be limited to 20 minutes.

Please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words by February 15th, 2008.

Block hotel reservations have been made and we will help with other accommodations (such as
technical equipment).
