This panel will investigate the ways in which the problem of addiction
has manifested itself in 20th century American literature. Specifically,
this panel will explore addiction and identity as well as its
performance, addiction and embodiment, and addiction as it is employed to
determine cultural boundaries. Moreover, this panel will examine the
parallels between queerness and addiction, including processes of
stigmatization, the formation of alternative communities and spaces, and
the uses and regulation of pleasure. Finally, this panel will consider
the late-20th century phenomenon of addiction’s acceptability and
pervasiveness as well as its renewed uses as a tool of exclusion. Please
send abstracts of 250 words as email attachments to Crystal Gorham Doss
