"Relics, Resurrections, and Reconstructions: Memory and Remembering(s) in
the Middle Ages"
A conference presented by the Columbia University Medieval Guild

The Columbia University Medieval Guild with the support of Columbia
Department of English and Comparative Literature is pleased to announce
that it will be holding its 19th Annual Interdisclipinary Graduate Student
Conference on 24 January, 2009. The topic for this year is memory both
personal and public in all of its abstract and physical represenations and
incarnations in the medieval period. Possible topics include but are not
limited to:

-Corporal memory/re-memberings

-Shifts in the location of definition of memory

-Textual memory/literary transpositions/rewritings/translations

-Relics/shrines

-Institutional memory

-Physical memory/ruins

-Sense/sensual memory

-Memories of the future: fate, prophecy, & oracles

-Visitations, ghosts, saint-sightings, and hauntings

-Grudges, Feuds, and Blood Oaths

-Repression, Palimpsests, and Book Burnings

The conference will also feature a keynote address (speaker TBA) and an
interdisciplinary roundtable on methodology in medieval studies.

We invite graduate students from all disciplines and departments to help
us extract some of the more notable ways in which memory placed its stamp
upon the Middle Ages. Abstracts of no more than 300 words, with name,
email, and institutional affiliation should be sent to
medievalmemory_at_gmail.com by December 1st, 2008. Submissions from students
working in fields or departments that have not traditionally had a strong
presence at Medieval Studies conferences are especially encouraged.

Please address all questions to the conference organizer, Jonathan Eskew,
at the email address provided above.
